On today’s Personal Safety, Robert Boilard from Defensive Strategies joined Lori to discuss the importance of assimilating and training police for cultural differences. They started off talking about the recent 911 call that ended in a 40 year old woman being shot and killed by Mohamed Noor, a Somali-American police officer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bob told us the city has 50,000 Somali refugees in the area, and how the city held a cultural diversity celebration for Noor after he was hired.

Next, they discussed whether or not Noor had enough training or was briefed about cultural differences from what was familiar to him in his previous culture. Details of the shooting were highlighted to expose things that just didn’t add up. They also talked about previous issues Noor had with manhandling a women, and how the Muslim religion devalues women.

This case is currently in the process of being investigated, bit they raised some common sense questions they felt needed to be answered. Finally, Bob told us about some basic things he covers in his training classes, which begs the question,”Is there proper training and assimilation for authorities and police with culturally diverse backgrounds? Listen in and hear more about it.
